On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. When the light is on, the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. These systems can only be diagnosed using a scanner designed for the airbag system. The scanners at Auto Zone or the ones that sell for @ $50 will not access the airbag system, only the engine systems (check engine light).
Check out these websites for more info on airbag system.

Try checking the multi-plug under the drivers and passenger seat. It is a thick orange wire. Disconnect the battery terninals and leave for about 15 mins for the airbag system to fully discharge. Then disconect the multiplugs under each seat and conect them back tight. These wires are for your seat belt pretensioners.
Try this first as no money is envolved.

Your air bag system has a fault and turned itself off. Possibly a sensor went bad.

More than likely it indicates a fault state and shows it is not functioning not that it's going to explode on you while driving.
