The best best for buying perfume for elderly ladies is to purchase from a line/manufacturer who is named after a woman (Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder). Having colour words like RED or WHITE tend to add to their elderliness.
If you're worried about the randomness of perfume selection try to go to a larger chain drugstore and speak to a "fragrance specialist". Often she'll see how many blue haired women buy what fragrance.
And if you're feeling saucy, go out and sniff some samples. Perhaps Adidas's latest scent may jolt your memories of Sunday tea with nana and it may be just the thought she was hoping for.

If you are close to your Nana, you know what perfume she buys: Buy her what she likes.

Why not buy a sampler package so that she can have many different scents.
Look at her perfumes and see which one is low and go with that one.
