I'm a college student. While i'm away at college i am living with a roommate. As some of you know good roommates are hard to find. The one i have now is a good roommate but i live 15-20 miles from school and for as much as I'm paying in rent I could be living on my own. (I am paying month to month, no lease)
Do i venture out on my own, find a single unit place for what I'm paying now but much closer to school, plus saving a ton on gas and wear and tear on my car, or do i stay where i'm at out of loyalty to a really good roommate?

I guess the question is...why is it a question for you? Is it more than just loyalty to a good roommate that makes this a question for you? I would make a list of all the pro's of moving..which you pretty much did here (saving a ton on gas etc.) and then the con's of moving. Will you have to sign more than a month to month lease? Will you miss the companionship of your roommate? Feel guilty for leaving him/her? etc.. Then do the same for staying..make a list of pros and cons of staying in your current situation. A lot of the things will be the same from the other list., I know. Anyway, when you are done pick four things that are the most important to you. When you see where those things fall..which list they fall under..it might help you make up your mind.
Hope that helps.

Why not ask your roommate to move with you?
Frankly, unless the commute is a real bear and totally terrible, a good roommate is really hard to find. Living on your own is hard, too, it's just lonely.

15 to 20 miles aint far. if your burning alot of fuel for your car air up the tires to proper specs drive slower. On the other hand your not married to your roommate are ya? You can give him notice to find another roommate and take your leave sounds fair to me?

Would your roommate consider moving with you to a cheaper place closer to school?

i think you should go even though your roommate is the one who hard to find. but to gain some good thing, you should sacrifice something right. think about it.

its up to you. if yr roommate did disturb you or what, just go. but if he is good and you're willing to pay for yr gas wear and tear, just stay.

that's hard man that's why you should keep it like straight business from day one... just talk to him about it cuz it would really be messed up if you like drop a month notice on him that you be really f'd up
