The "Golliwogg" (later "Golliwog") is a rag doll-like, children's literary character created by Florence Kate Upton in the late 19th century. The Golliwogg was inspired by a blackface minstrel doll Upton had as a child in America. At one point it was very popular in Europe and as a result has become a collector's item. However, the image of the doll has become the subject of heated debate. One aspect of the debate in its favour argues that it should be preserved and passed on as a cherished cultural artifact and childhood tradition, while opponents argue it should be retired as a relic of an earlier time when racism against black people was blatant.

As RedCro said very diplomatically--Golliwog was a term first used in Britain for slaves. I t was used to name wee girl's dolls etc. A terrible word, and shouldn't be used.

Get a life you cupid stunt. A golly is a golly. when was the last time you heard a black person called a wog? shall we ban the garden spade whilst we are at it? All the old words like nig nog, **** jungle bunny etc have almost died out because people realised that they were hurtful. I admit the N word is still about and also used by blacks. I loved my golly. He would play with teddy and panda for hours when i was little. I certainly did not accociate him with any black person i saw People like you are the cause of racial tension in this country. You percieve an insult or slight when there is nothing there.
