A good reply depends on whether you're male or female and WHERE you plan to stay and HOW LONG. You won't like the air polution, noise, paying for a public toilet that's horrendous at best, rarely a hand washing facility.

ALWAYS take an airport taxi. Offices inside the airport near the baggage claim area. Go directly there with your luggage and they'll give you a set price (pay in advance) for your destination. They log the cab # and destination before you leave.

YOu can't get close to an airport terminal without a current valid ticket, and even the Manila terminals close overnight. There's nothing inside the international terminal anyway, but the domestic terminal is pretty nice. Be prepared to pay cash the last official act before boarding an airplane at a Philippine airport. Manila costs something like 500 pesos, other airports may be less. I think CdO was maybe 100 pesos.

There's a 15% value-added tax to everything you buy.

Corrupt constitutional government that's fraught with attempted coups. Best not to discuss politics. On one visit of mine, the president declared a state of emergency and the newspapers and public criticism were monitored.

I would bring what you value. Don't worry about bringing stuff to give or barder with. Now if you have a special person in your life you can ask them if they would like you to bring something. Otherwise just bring what you need and want.

I wouldn't bring appliances, electronics, phones, car, furniture. Not sure about a desk top pc, but it won't hurt to bring a lap top. I would not buy a lap to or desk top before going to bring with you though.

Typically its a good idea to have a plan in place to return to your home country at a certain point to pick up or buy what you need. But you'll find prices in the PI cheap enough to buy what you need there. PI has a lot of issues so you should have copies of important papers made and stored with a parent or sibling or someone you can trust.

If you really want to give out some prenents keep gifts to $10 and buy either T shirts or jeans at the swap meet. The tag does not have to say made in America, it just should be bought in America. If possible, and you have a choice of two products at same price, buy american made.

Foods: That's a new story. You might want to figure out what they don't sell that you want and arrange with the local shop owner to have it imported for you. You'd be amazed at the efforts a sari sari worker will take to supply you with only a slight overhead charge. Or you can have friends ship to you. For me it was Classico spaghetti sauce. Typically in Manila and Angeles there's getter selections of food for foreigners and you can arrange to have your helper or yourself make regular trips to key stores.

Toys: I've been through this with my wifes, and I think it's better to buy the toys there for a slight surcharge than to go through the trouble and expense of shipping them. First, you should get to know the kids to find out what they like. Second, it's not that much more to buy a toy there. Third, a toy shouldn't cost 20-30 dollars, just a few hundred pesos is enough for a kid.

Liquor: That's something they love and the best way for this is to buy it in country. Subic and Angeles as well as the airport have great shops if you must buy a lot. The travel laws are too picky, spillage is a problem, and weight is a hassle so don't bother to bring it on a flight.

Cell phone: You're cell phone probably won't work there so just donate it and buy a new one. I loaned my prepaid phone to a relative and when I come home they let me use it in the states.

What's good for one is good for all: If you haven't experience it yet, let me warn you. If you are white and visit the PI they will think you are rich. So if you give one person a gift, to say a 5 year old, then Mom and Dad want a gift too. This is because I made the mistake of giving very expensive toys worth $10-$20 each which evidently was a lot. So it's easy to hurt feelings when you only have so much. Best thing my wife does is she gives nothing and instead gives $500 to Mom and Dad who then distribute the gift money as they see fit. It's cheeper that way too and no one gets insulted.

If you plan to stay long , my best advise is buy your digital camera and videocam with international warranty from known manufacturers like Sony , Canon , Panasonic or Hp . Because you may need to troubleshoot or service your electronics tools then they could help you . It would be about 20% cheaper from your country than here .

Actually , if you ask my best advise travel light , its no use paying excess baggage and taxes on your brought in item , cause almost everything is available in the Philippines and sometimes much cheaper that USA where most electronic items are imported also .All other knick knacks we have here.
also when you exit the airport , you are entitled to purchase USD 2,000.00 at our tourist duty free shop at Fiesta Duty free beside ther airport where all types of electronics and other things are available tax free and you could win a car int heir monthly raffle .

In general, electronics are more expensive. I suggest you bring your laptop and digital camera. As for a cell phone, that'll depend if what you have right now. Otherwise, you should get one here.
