You almost answered your own question. The thing is not to think. Since the mind always thinks then you have to think of simple things that don't actually cause thought. That's why they say to count she; but, I find that too much.
Therefore, if you just count from 1 to 10 over and over, you will fall asleep. There's no thought in counting from 1 to 10; but, you can do it with anything. I some times use the words, boom, boom boom......
Try it; but, don't expect to fall a sleep that fast; give it time. You will find you won't dream as much either.

Think about the feel of the pillow against your head or the sheets against yopur skin. Focusing on that will lead to a mental loop which should knock you out.

Warm glass of milk (or soymilk if you're vegan), soothing music, counting, focusing on relaxing individual parts of your body, doing push-ups in bed- whatever works best. Good luck!

Well you can mastu***** and them fall asleep...........or create a garden in your mind. Till the soil, plant the seeds, weed, nurture, smell the fresh earth, feel the exhaustion of your muscles, relax as the crops grow, feel the sunshine and the heat, water it, pick the ripe fruits of your labor..........and in a positve and sleepy frame of mind drift to sleep.

think of something nice, and comforting to yourself, that'll might help you sleep, if that dont help, try sleeping pills.
