I have a travel system Graco Safeseat (higher weight and height limit than Graco Snugride....a real +) My ten month daughter is still in the infant car seat, and I sometimes just snap the seat into the stroller instead of taking her out. It is great!
However, the travel system can get a bit bulky...I also bought a Maclaren umbrella type stroller (it goes up until 55 pounds!!) to use when I want something much smaller.
It is worth it to spend the little extra money to get pieces that have a higher weight/height limit so you can use them much longer. My daughter is 30 inches and 18 pounds and will probably still be in the infant car seat until she is one since she still fits so nicely in it!!
Good luck!

I am 8 months pregnant with my 1st and I obsessed about this question for 2 weeks before I decided to ask for the Graco Metrolite travel system ($200) for my shower. I chose it because the snugrider carseat has the top ratings for safety (the Graco safeseat does not) and the stroller was lightweight, easy to fold, and reclined virtually flat. Basically, I don't know what I'm going to need because every baby grows at a different pace. My cousin's baby had grown out of the infant car seat at 3 months! So this travel system seemed like a versatile option that would serve a number of needs now and later, and even if I need to go out and buy a pram I can cross that bridge when I come to it. It didn't seem worth it to buy a $900 stroller that could do-it-all when I could buy 3 excellent stroller for that price. Nor could I see buying a pram when I don't know how long or when I will need it.

I, personally, loved the travel system because we could put our son in the carseat and throw the stroller in the back of the SUV in case we went somewhere that didn't have grocery baskets, i.e. the mall. It just depends on what brand and how sturdy the carseat is when buckled in the backseat of the car. I have to say, though, if you are on a budget of any kind and are going to need a stroller to, the travel system is the way to go.

I have the Graco travel system and love it. I loved being able to transfer my infant from the house to the car and to the stroller without having to wake her up and take her out of the carrier. She is now almost 3 and I still use the stroller for her. I'm also pregnant and glad I already have the carrier and two bases ready for when our new baby arrives.

You should not get a travel system! Although they are easy for the reason mentioned, they are not good for the spinal development of a newborn which needs to bed laid out flat not scrunched up in a car seat for hours!
The Government recommendations are that a child under 6 months does not spend more than an hour in a car seat at a time.
Get a pram for the first 6 months.
