You have reason to be concerned his mother is clearly in denial about his weight problem this is quite common. go to this link and you can find out what your stepson BMI is http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.aspx By your stepsons age and weight, it says at 150 pounds that he would be at risk of becoming over weight. So you are absolutely right when you say he needs to lose 100+ pounds because around the weight of 130ish is what considered a healthy weight according to this child BMI calculator.

If he gained 38 pounds he either has medical condition that needs to be addressed or he is constantly eating. You might look at his eating habits when he is at your home. I would discuss this with your husband and you both can approach his mother together. You can even show this BMI Calculator to verify for her. If she wants her son to live a long life its time to stop living in denial. Accept the problem and then deal with it,

If he does not have a medical condition it could be as easy as just cutting back what he eats and make sure he gets daily exercise, you could all go for a family walk around the neighborhood. It would be important that all 3 of you , 4 if he has a step father are on the same page and apply the same rules when it comes to exercise, meals and snacks. at both homes. If he has an eating mental eating disorder it might be harder to tame but its best you start now. It will just take a bit more effort, find something that he is really good at to boost his self esteem if it is low. You say this is since September well did he got to a new school, i would ask him how school is going. Did a close friend move away etc

I don't think that your step-son should lose 100 pounds. That sounds really drastic.
Try getting him involved with something like, soccer or baseball. Something that he loves to do. Why not make it a family thing where the whole family goes on a walk? If you have a dog, why not ask him to walk the dog for you? If you make his lunch for school, why not put lots of fruits, nuts in his lunch? It seems like he has gained a lot of weight in a short period of time. He may have a thyroid problem. I would take him to the doctor and see if his thyroid is working correctly. That could be the answer.
Good Luck.

No he is not 100 pounds overweight. His ideal weight depends on several factors. For example his bone structure. I am 5'7" with a small bone structure and my ideal wieght is around 180 plus i am female. The best way to find out if he is overweight is to ask his doctor. They will tell you his ideal weight and they will be able to take all factors in when telling you. I would not worry so much yet my son was 5'5 when he turned 12 and he is 14 and 6'2 now. As he grows taller he will slim up if he is active. Hope this helps.

no he's normal size considering his age height and weight. its all based on those things.

as he gets older he might lose some weight but not much maybe those 38 lbs.

guys are supposed to be 238.

especially if hes like atletic or something. if not still.

and its not really your buisness that hes a little over weight. its unfair for you to say that! and its extremely mean and could ruin any bounds you might have with this boy!

if he was 100 pounds less i would be seriously worried for him it would be extremely in healthy!

He may or may not have a medical condition.
More likely than that is that he is a young boy who is going through a lot and has learned to use food as a comfort. Being an adolescent can be very tough. He is entering a very difficult age and he might have self-esteem problems. If he is overweight chances are good that kids pick on him at school for it. He might overeat for emotional reasons. He might also be prone to being overweight genetically. If so, it could be very easy for him to pack on a lot of weight. Especially if that problem is coupled with emotional overeating.
The cycle of emotional overeating can be very hard to break. Almost impossible for some people. Now is the time to start breaking him of it. Try to get him involved in other activities that will boost his self-esteem and maybe even try to explain to him that you understand him. Find out about school and how his life is and try to teach him the importance of a balanced, healthy diet combined with exercise.
There are many books available on the subject too.

If he has gained 38 pounds since September then it sounds like he has a medical condition that is causing the excessive weight gain. His mother is wrong, he is not 10 pounds overweight- he is definitely more than that.
That much weight gain in such a short time is not normal and is often a sign of a medical condition (thyroid problem, etc). He needs to be examined by a doctor. You need to stop this problem in it's tracks because the older he gets, the harder it will be to change his lifestyle and lose the weight.
