The beginnings of virtually every field is in philosophy. Philosophers decide the scope and suitable methodology of a field, and then interpret findings. Philosophy is the substance of every discipline, made clear by the highest degree in most fields being a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).

I think in research, principle and methods go together. I don't know much about its real function in general philosophy.

Methodology is under the umbrella of a principle, so the principle should clearly be defined first in order that the methodology will be achievable and will be meaningful.

But for ordinary activity, I think the methodology doesn't necessarily requires a well defined principle.
