Depends on where you live, but most places can fire you for almost any reason. Sorry you weren't feeling well and hope you're better now.
I guess the amount of times you've called in is a relative judgment, but I think I've called in sick 3 times in 7 years.

Absolutely, they can fire you. It doesn't matter if you live in an 'at will' state or not. Calling in sick '2 or 3 times' since march '07 is excessive. Employers ecpect that you will never call in sick, let alone 2 or3 times in 9 months. That's an excuse that flies maybe once a year.

You have absolutely no recourse with your former company except to collect unemployment benefits.

Depends on your State. Most States are "Employment at will", which means they can fire you for ANY reason not prohibited by law.

If you're in an at-will state, you can quit at any time and you can be fired at any time for any reason or no reason (any reason that doesn't violate federal law, such as racial discrimination etc).
