So I was recently diagnosed with PCOS but my OB/GYN didn't think my weight was a problem, yet, because i've always been pretty petite. however, I have gained 8 pounds in the last 4 months, and the doctor thinks this is just normal teenage weight gain.

But I've had really terrible (tee hee) gas, as in, constant burping/passing wind (oh god is it embarrassing), and i did some research online and it said that intestinal gas is a symptom of insulin resistance (IR), which can be caused/related to PCOS, correct?

does anyone know anything about this?

I do have the following symptoms for IR (checked other sites)

1) Craving for carbs (major binges after school sometimes)
2) Sleepiness after binging (i pass out for a couple hours if i do give in to my cravings)
3) general fatigue/depression. This might just be because I'm in highschool and we don't get sleep anyways.
4) and of course, the hellas gas.

Burping can also sometimes mean a problem with the esophagus. As for gas, sometimes it can also be an occurrence with Irritable Bowel Syndrome which can be triggered by many things. (Just wanted to mention this in case it turns out that PCOS is not the problem causing your symptoms)

As for Insulin Resistance being related to PCOS yes it can for some women but not all. Only about 50% of women who have PCOS have Insulin Resistance.

PCOS is caused by high testosterone levels. These testosterone levels can cause weight gain of around 20 lbs which is mostly water.

To find out for sure if this is PCOS related I would recommend talking to your mom to see about a consultation with an endocrinologist (a doctor that diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders involving hormones). They can run a series of tests to find out if PCOS is the problem.

In the mean time here's the link to a site that may help you find more information. It's at: http://www.pcosupport.org
