The Tinkerer

“Pots and Pans! Pots and Pans!”
The tinker’s out front with his cart…
“Tea kettles mended! Fire place swept!”
Whatever needs done…he can,

“Clean up the yard, stitch a hem!”
He’s a crafty old geezer, is he,
“Solder or paste! Knobs replaced!”
Bring things broken to him,

“Garden weeded! Fix a screen!”
No riddle gets the better of him,
“Doors unlocked! Steps replaced!”
He’s got a good eye, a good bean.

Very evocative of the clinking , clanking cart that came around in that different era when you went out in robe and slippers to get the bottles of milk on the porch in the early morning.

I've seen this in movies, especially in the Scrooge movies and in movies about old-time Brooklyn. You certainly make those times come to life for those of us who don't actually remember them. Again, you've written a song and I can see the workers at night in their local pub, after tinkering all day, singing and waving their mugs of the foamy stuff. You have an uncanny ability to make the reader see and feel your portrayals. This is not silly at all. Bien au contraire!

I enjoyed the poem very much! It brought back memories of Brooklyn, when a man with horse and buggy would sing out, pots and pans, and knives sharpened.

Boy, you certainly bring memories to the surface. Maybe, you're doing the Vulcan mind probe on me.

I remember these guys too. In Chicago, the guy would pedal up the street on a tricycle with a large box of tools and a huge knife sharpener. He would stop several times on each block, calling out to the people, letting them know he was there. Good memories, TD, thanks for bringing them out. Good job, buddy.

Side note: Loved the reference to the Vulcan mind meld. Too funny.

WoW! You have told me things only my grandparents ever mentioned before. I like it very much, and would have liked to have been around during those times.

You, a "little thing"? Silly you.

It is really good to read out loud, as usual...

The excellent and perfect rhythm reminds me of this:

One, two...buckle my shoe,
Three, four...shut the door,
.....***dammit i can't recall the rest of them anymore***.....

hee-hee! =)
