The assassination of John F. Kennedy. It completely changed the way everyone looked at the world. Here was a charismatic, inspiring young President who challenged us to accept responsibility and achieve communal greatness - taken out in a shocking and totally unexpected way.
To see its effects on people to this day, look at your pocket change. In 1963 and before, you would certainly have had at least one half-dollar. You NEVER got two quarters in change. But in 1964 Kennedy's image was put on the half-dollar, and he was so dearly missed that people began to hold onto each half-dollar until they disappeared from circulation.
Don Dilillo rightly called Kennedy's death "the six seconds that broke the back of the American Century."

The Fall of South Vietnam
Iran Hostage Chrisis
Fall of Communism and the Berlin Wall (I'd grown up believing it would never be torn down)
George W. Bush declared President by Supreme Court, which exceeded the power of the Court and installed a President effectively disregarding the Constitution.
Sept. 11, 2001
The Invasion of Iraq.

I think 9/11 has to be the worst, most infamous, atrocious
happening in my 52 years. I wish I'd never seen it.

Other events which I lived through and remember well:

Landing on the MOON!!! Awesome!
President Kennedy's assassination
Challenger Explosion
Columbia Shuttle Disaster
End of the Soviet Union and Berlin Wall comes down
Death of Princess Diana

These are the things you always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard about them.

VJ day. For those who don't recognize this term, it was the day that this country celebrated the end of WW II: "Victory in Japan" day.

I was 11 yrs. old at the time. Our family had moved to California to be with my dad, who had been drafted into the navy during the last year of the war.

He and a friend and his wife and my mother, had driven off to celebrate. Us four children had stayed at home, expecting their return in the late afternoon.

As the day progressed on into evening, and they had not returned, we all became panic stricken and very afraid: we didn't know what had happened to them nor what to do about it.

Finally around mid-night I think it was, someone we didn't know came by and told us that our parents and the couple they were with, while waiting at a stop light, the car they were in had been rear-ended by a Greyhound Bus; and that they were in the hospital, but were okay and would be home soon.

So instead of being a day of celebration for us children, it turned out to be one of horrible anxiety and fear. Will never forget it.
