The observation that America is addicted to oil is nothing new. Think about the great oil crisis of the 70's when gas was in very short supply and people were lined up outside of gas stations waiting.

None of the presidents since then have been able to shake the addiction. Not Jimmy Carter. Not Reagan. Not Bill Clinton. Not either George Bush.

I don't have it in front of me, but I think that current George Bush committed additional funding to universities and corporations for R&D work to develop technologies and processes that provide alternative sources of energies. With R&D, it sometimes takes years before the benefits of the effort are finally seen. Could happen 10 years from now.

I don't blame our current president for this problem since it has fallen on all of the other presidents with no breakthrough. I think it would have been inspirational of our current president to rally the nation behind the goal of (for example) reducing our oil dependency by 20% by the year 2020. Then put some serious resources on the effort and seriously track it and keep the topic and goal in the public's eye. A similar challenge to the nation as Kennedy gave us to go to the moon. The entire national rallied towards that goal and we achieved it.

Yeah America is addicted to oil.....and Bush and his oil buddies wouldn't have it any other way.

Chump Bush gives us a "tax break" but still gets money for his buddies through sky high gas prices----and don't tell me that he is helpless. If so---than you are as dumb as he is.

Bush is a joke. He and the Saudis are good friends. Wonder why.

He can't do it. WE have to do it. If we wait for the one party system to do it for us, we'll have died waiting in a few years and no change will happen. Doesn't matter who is in office. Blend E-85 into your car, starting at 1 gallon per 10 - if only to pay a farmer instead of a terrorist. Write your congressmen/women to have them repeal the EPA reg making it illegal to convert our cars to E-85 (Costs about 5-700 dollars per car). Or better yet, do it anyway - the law says "reasonable expectation of lowering pollution", which is why we do 10% ethanol already. All we have to do to show we're serious about change is a couple small things.

Sure, and we will be until somebody comes up with another way to feed our vehicles. They are hopelessly addicted and talking heads seem unable to come up with alternative power that makes a real difference. And, remember, Bush is an oil man and it is not in his interest for us to use less!

Have you stated setting an example yet,do you walk or ride your bike to work?Do you buy carbon credits? We are an oil driven world,no ifs, ands, or buts. Each country's economy is based on it.There is the hope of new sources of energy, none of it is practical at the moment, except as supplementary added to oil and coal energy. It cant replace it yet and I think it will be years before it totally can.
