I don't think it is true that all smart people prefer rock, but I think that smart people may prefer smarter music. Rock offers a lot of variety, as opposed to other genres. Country songs are generally either about a cheating lover or sentimental parent-child songs. Mainstream pop and radio-friendly R&B songs are almost always something about love. Rap these days is mostly about sex.
Rock, on the other hand, can be about anything. Muse's latest album, Supermassive Black Hole, has themes of astronomy and global conspiracy theories. System of a Down is about current politics as well as past genocides. A lot of rock music is also interested in pushing boundaries musically, rather than making catchy beats or sampling older music.
But there are other kinds of music that can be considered intelligent, including classical, modern composition, indie anything, jazz, and more adult-oriented R&B.

I find that smart people like smart music, whatever genre that may fall into. For example, in hip-hop, I find that dullards tend to like artists Soulja Boy and 50 Cent, while more educated and intelligent people gravitate toward artists like Lupe Fiasco and Nas. When it comes to art, I guess everyone is just looking for something they can relate to.

Well, I'd say I'm a bit smarter than the majority of my grade, but I'm no genius. I listen to almost every genre of music - from today's pop, classic rock, alternative, classical, folk, country... the list goes on. So no, I'd say it's not really a fact :P

Perhaps. Because they're lyrics actually talk about stuff other than girls, sex and drugs.
