if i was going to be in agony for the last day of my natural life, i would just try to die one day earlier. It's just one day.

in that kind of situation where it is legal under a doctor's care, most people would choose morphine.
But in most US states, assisted suicide is illegal while pulling the plug on 'expensive' medicaid patients is not. Go figure!
Edit added:
Okay, sorry for the unrelated, snarky political comment about how poor people are treated as expendable...
But to answer the question directly... I would probably take painkillers and enjoy my last day the best I could.
I apologize about being glib... I guess this question was difficult to answer because I live with chronic pain myself, and feel conflicted about how to handle my own 'quality of life' issues.... and worry about how my next of kin would handle it if my faculties were taken away (a rare chance as any), so this answer isn't really that hypothetical for me.

No, nobody will know excactly how you feel at your last hour. Still I spoke with several people working in the hospice area and they told me for most people it is as if they already can "see" into the beyond and they receive a helping hand from there. So you would not be alone and helpers will be with you at your last hours not from this side but from the other side.

it is OK to kill yourself to avoid torture. Most soldiers would rather take a bullet then be captured by Al-Qa'ida, going down in glory rather then the alternative. I was never in that situation myself luckily. I can not be sure I would have the guts to do it should the need have arouse.

I don't think people change when death comes calling. If you avoid pain in life you will avoid it in death. It is just a matter of knowing if there is something more important to you than avoiding pain. To me dying in pain while unpleasant is not a bad death but choosing death just to avoid pain may not be the best choice.

Nope, I would live each moment to its fullest..
I would be afraid, I would cry... but.. things in the end I know would be fine.. My soul would prevail and I would simply travel on to the next lifetime..
