I'm trying out for musical theater at my school and i have to sing two songs. I was given "can't help lovin dat man" from showboat as a required song, and i have to pick a song of my choice, but it has to be a song that has been in a broadway show. I'm an alto, so i dont really want anything too too high, and preferably something upbeat...but im up for anything!!! any ideas?

Check out

"Cabaret" from Caberet
"I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair" South Pacific
"I Enjoy Being a Girl" Flower Drum Song
"Honey Bun" South Pacific
"In My Own Little Corner" Cinderella

These are all good songs for altos, they are upbeat and appropriate for a school audition.

Break a leg!

DO NOT, whatever you do, sing ANYTHING from Les Miserables, Wicked, Rent, or Chicago. These musicals are incredibly overused and your director will roll his eyes and ignore you if you go in singing something like that.
Here are some great ones to try:
My Strongest Suit - Aida
Every Story Is a Love Story - Aida
Privilege to Pee - Urinetown (loveee this song!)
Waiting for Life - Once on this Island

Those are wonderful, upbeat songs for altos. The first three are more belty, and if you can do that, show it off! Waiting for Life would be not as belty. Good luck, and have fun! Go to www.musicnotes.com to download the sheet music, it's always a good idea to bring that with you.

Look at "Oklahoma" for both the songs of the female lead and the comic female ("I'm just a Girl who can't say 'no'" which might be a comic alternative to the required song.)
Look at "Annie Get Your Gun" for songs for female lead which include "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly"—Annie and her siblings
"The Girl That I Marry"—Frank and Annie
"You Can't Get a Man with a Gun"—Annie
"There's No Business Like Show Business"—Frank, Charlie Davenport, Annie, and ensemble
"They Say It's Wonderful"—Annie and Frank
