I'm just finishing up a break from school. I went from high school where I was an honor student working two jobs through my senior year and the summer between that and college to a full time college student. This past October I got both mono and the flu at midterm and dropped out rather than do poorly or get too far behind. This break was one of the best things I could have done for myself. I was able to get healthy and get more financially stable. I also know now that I absolutely want to finish school because I miss it now.
Take a break if that is what you need to do and figure out what you want to do with your life. College is not for everyone, and if you're miserable, than it's not for you.
Life is way too short to spend it being miserable. Good luck!

No, it is not a crime to take a break from school. Just keep in mind that if you are currently pursuing a degree in college, if you take a break, you should apply for a "Leave of Absence" from your college. This way, when you return, you can resume your studies where you left off. Even if the curriculum for the degree program has changed, you will be able to resume the original curriculum you started. Check with your academic adviser to inquire if this is an option for you.
If you are not currently in school, taking a break before starting your college career is not a crime either. Some people wait to start college so they can obtain some work experience and earn some money college. College can be very costly so earning enough money to pay your tuition is a responsible thing to do. Just keep in mind that sometimes after being in the work force, it's sometimes hard to get into the mind-set of college. But also, life is a life-long leearning process so college will always be there for you when you are ready for it.
Best wishes!

I took a break, moved half way around the world and taught English for awhile. No, it's not a crime to take a break and no, it doesn't always look bad. In fact, if you spend that time wisely, it looks good because you've got a good experience and good reasons for the break. It's especially great if you don't know what you want to do yet. Take the time and figure yourself out. I think for some people taking a break is the first sign of maturity. Admitting that they quite belong in university yet or ever is something that a lot of students should do rather than worrying about what they ought to do.

Absolutely not. In fact, there are lots of students taking a break after school graduation. This break is to recharge your batteries and have some entertainment. It helps one to freshen up and be enthusiastic about further studies.
However taking a break from studies during schooling is not advisable as it slows down the momentum and dampens enthusiasm.
Anyway, it is not a crime literally.

No, that is what I'm doing right now. I don't know what I want to get a degree in and I really don't feel like taking all my generals and not ending up doing anything with them. So many other girls that I know did just that. They went to school undecided and took their generals then a year or two later they ended up dropping out of school to get married and have babies. I want to have some idea of what I want out of life before I waste money on a few classes that I may never use.

No, but it is a disappointment to the people who want to see you go though this fairly tiny hurdle in life.
These are the common reactions you get from people:
1. Why did you catch a disease or something? Then they will surreptitiously look at your body like they are searching for cancer, or tumor.
2. Next thing is to check you out for a mental breakdown, Did you do drugs? Are you on rehab, did you break up with boyfriend/girlfriend ?
3. Last one. You will just take the year off to do what, take it easy? You lazy bum. Good for nothing happy go lucky partygoer, irresponsible etc etc.
No, it is not a crime. But it is not a shining testament to you either. The only good thing that comes out of it is that people stop putting you into a pedestal, if you hated that position in your family. You will justt be officially another freeloader. Lol.

Growing up with my parents it would have led to a crime. If I quit school my parents would have killed me.

no it's not a crime but you might find it's very hard for you to go back to (just to motivate yourself). Do it now, finish now you wont regret it.
