A wintry mix can be any form of liquid or frozen precipitation. This can include, rain, drizzle and fog. As well as, sleet, freezing rain, ice and snow pellets, and snow. Often wintry mix will start out as liquid and then turn to frozen as the atmosphere cools.

It is not unusual to have several types falling at the same time. For an hour last weekend, we had freezing rain, sleet, and snow falling all at the same time. It was not pleasant, especially after the power went out.

Wintry mix means possible rain turning to sleet and/or snow. A lot of the country is getting ready to find out exactly what it means. I'm in southern Tennessee and the temperature has dropped and the wind has picked up. By morning, the wintry mix will be outside my windows. Brrrr !!

Freezing rain, and snow. Most of the time when that happens the air is too dry to produce wet snow, and will only have flurries or dry snow.
