so i work in retail and it gets busy around this time of year like everyone knows. WELL last night i started to get a bad headache and i figured it would go away with sleep.. it didnt, i woke up at 3am with a horrible headache and threw up twice, i fell back asleep until about 7 when i still felt like sh*t, i couldnt keep any food down, so i called into work (four hours before my shift) and told my manager i couldnt come in, she asked why and i told her... she then told me that i was expected to come in because 4 people did not show up... do you think that was right of her do do?

and the thing is - i rarely call in sick, ive worked there (coughKOHLScough) since march 07 and have called in 2 or 3 times. She told me to call her back at 10 which i did, then a different mananger called and she told me to drink tea and i was required to come in for some of my shift... the days over and i still feel like sh*t. People are constantly calling of because of how they treat us. We are very short handed at our store (about 60-70 employees) and on days when we are super busy and have only one person in each department, so we always end up staying til 3 and they dont get off their asses to help us, they just bark orders over the intercom.

And another question? The manager who told me i HAVE to come in is the store mananger, but isnt my techical manager (mine is the soft-lines manager... who LOVES me and if it was her that answered she would have probably came to my house and brought me soup). But can she fire me because I didnt come in when she told me to, even tho I called in?

NO! She's the manager, it's her responsibility to find other workers. You can't be held responsible for being sick. You should talk to your human resources. That's unethical. Those other 4 people didn't show. Why did you?

The National Labor Relations Board (commonly referred to as NLRB) will try to protect workers from arbitrary or unequal treatment.
If she told you to come in but not anyone else, that would be unequal treatment. Especially if there is some difference between you and the others such as sex, race or religion.
If she told all of her employees to come in sick, she is just plain stupid. If everyone is getting sick at the same time there may be a flu bug going around that would make the customers sick.
If that is the case and you do go in, you might want to run to her desk instead of the restroom if your about to erupt

Seriously if you do go in tell her straight up that your not well and should not be expected to perform as well as normal. She should at least owe you one for bailing her out.

Absolutely not! If you were sick, which you most definitely sound to be, you should have the right to stay home and get well. If your boss would have given you a day or two to heal and rest, I'm sure your illness would go away sooner. This would mean you could come back to work with a clear mind and a healthy body, and wouldn't have to be drowsy and ill for a few days. Overall, you staying home is for the greater good of your company, and your boss should realize that. :]]

It wasn't kind or considerate. However, you work in retail, which is the epitome of capitalism, and your boss is responsible for profit or loss. If nobody comes in to sell the merchandise, she cannot make a profit. Unfortunately, retail is an industry where most clerks are replaceable, especially this time of year. So, really, it wasn't about you; it was just business. I suspect that your boss will one day find out that treating people in such a way is ultimately bad for business, and she'll stop. Maybe.

Maybe she expected you to get rid of it. When worker's start calling in, manager's expect the last scheduled to handle it no matter what's going on. The manager preferred being an asshole rather than doing the work herself. I would've told her to stfu. You were sick. The retail world is a bunch of bs to work in and customers don't make it any better. Kudo's to you if you actually went to work in your condition.

You could always tell her your pregnant and she might stop being a douche.

People without pain, or with higher thresholds to pain are notoriously unsympathetic. As for right or wrong, she was already in a bind, as 4 others beat you to the punch, so she was probably so consumed by her own woes to feel your pain as well.

It sounds like you had a nice migraine going. Might want to discuss that with your doctor. I used to get them something awful. By afternoon, I would hurt so bad I couldn't see! Only thing that would help me by then was a shot at the doctors. Can't remember what they gave me, but they do have medicine for migraines that you can take at home.

Of course not. Just because other people beat you to the chase doesn't mean you're obligated to come in. If you really want to be spiteful, you could go into work, puke on her, and THEN go home. Sometimes managers can be really stupid, but I think a little puke on the blouse clears up the stupidity pretty quickly (even if temporarily).

At this time of the year she, too, is between a rock and a hard place. Her staff is no doubt outgunned for the next several days.If you are a migraine sufferer, there are medications. If this is the first time you have had a headache of this magnitude, seek proper medical care.

No. Its not right. Tell her you spoke to your doc and you might be contagious so he advised you to take it easy for the rest of the day. Or, go to work, throw up in the middle of the store and leave. On the way out say OMG! I told you I shouldn't come in as loud as you possibly can! Why did you make me????
