Many of them are associations with the area they play in (like the Pittsburgh Steelers--the steel industry there), the history of that area (San Francisco 49ers--the 1849 California Gold Rush), or alliteration/sound (Philadelphia Phillies). Some are chosen by the owners (Paul Brown was coach and owner of the Cleveland BROWNs) or by a public vote (the Seattle Mariners, to name one). Those account for a lot of pro teams, anyway.

Washington Wizards ranks up there. The Mighty Ducks should spark fear in an opponent. As a mater of fact, all cute furry animal names should be banned as a sports team name. Ohio State Buckeyes (it is a seed from a tree) Alabama Crimson Tide (one of the curses on the Egyptians in the bible?) LA Clippers (a ship name for a basketball team?) North Carolina Tar Heels (clean off your shoes) Detroit Red Wings (OK, what does that have to do with hockey)

We just got a new hockey team a few years back, and a contest was held - with the winning name being chosen by the owner of the team.

Where I live, the Vikings (NFL) got their name from the large Norwegian population here. The Timberwolves (NBA) from a native animal, and the Twins (MLB) from the Twin Cities of Mpls and St. Paul.
