I'm starting to play guitar. Played for a few months now but I need to get new strings but I don't know what type of strings to get.

Take your strings with you, or your guitar, when you go to the store to buy new ones.

If you can not take your guitar or the old string(s) go to a music shop and ask the people who sell the guitars.
Describe what guitar you have, how you play it and what kind of string (nylon, metal) you have.
The people in the shops were always helpful for me.

If you put a string in the wrong place, it is more likely to break when you tune it, or you won't be able to tune it properly.
