I have Verizon DSL internet which offers free Norton. I also have AOL access which offers free McAfee. Which is the better one to use on my computer? Both are free and it appears they offer the same security protection.

I have tried most antivirus software. And Norton and McAfee are the most commercially used but they're also the most to HOG your pc down. And with AOL crap, mixed with any of these two, your surfing experienced will be with either frequent pop ups or spam. The best antivirus that I have used and has prevented many infections is Kaspersky antivirus. You get updates hourly. The best and doesn't hog your system. NORTON and MCAFEE suck.

Neither. Aside from both programs being terrible in their own right, anti-virus programs are the wrong solution anyway.

There is very little you have to do to have a malware free computer:
1. Use a browser that doesn't use the Internet Explorer engine, such as Opera, Mozilla Firefox or my recommendation, K-Meleon.
2. Don't install shady software.

That's it, that's all you have to do. I'm a heavy computer user and haven't had a problem following those two rules.

Really, They are both a load of crap. I had Norton 2005 and 2007 installed and all it did was sit there. No protection, Slows computer.

I recommend (if you prefer to install a free AntiVirus) Avira AntiVir (Google it). It has 99.45% Detection rate and updates itself.

I Hope this helps you.

Check out Kapersky Labs. This is the "Defender" series. I have this product on my machine and on my wife's machine. I trust it completely.

As to Norton and McAfee, neither is top-rated.

I would assume that at least one of them is a trial period, I personally use AVG. It is free to download online (just search AVG), and will stay free without having to worry about trial periods.

Neither of them! Neither are the best and they are both hogs!!

I use Avast Home. Free and good enough for me.
