The one I have now creates so much current that it literally spits water all over the lid of the tank, and then it it drips over the edge.

Its a small sized elite - in a three gallon aquarium.

Any ideas?

What you want to do is bleed off some air, so get a gang valve, run one outlet to the airstone, and open another outlet to relieve pressure.

Restricting air builds up back pressure, shortening the life of the pump. The gang valve is cheaper than a replacement diaghram.

It's not the type of airstone, but the force of the air through it that's causing your problem. If you don't want to get a different pump, you can buy regulators that you can insert into the line to control the flow: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10420/product.web
