1) dunno. sometimes it's not with a malicious intent, but rather a very apathetic one. sometimes it's impulse, or acting under the influence of a substance, or an abnormal state of mind. and occasionally it's madness.
2) if they're adults, they should have known the consequences. trial, conviction, sentence.

Well, if you have ever watched cold case files, CSI , law and order, or even columbo, you would know that there is a fine line between love and hate. If you add up years of pent up jealously, resentment, anger, and so forth, you have just the right ingredients to create a recipe for murder. The "reward" is usually jail time, since the family/friends are the murderers in over 50% of all homicide cases. These are the first people who are investigated because of this fact. You usually need a motive (a reason) to be so angry as to kill someone; the people we know the most intimately also turn out to be the people we dislike the most in the long run.

A lot of these people suffer from mental illness and aren't fully aware of what they're doing. Others have anger that stems from ignorance or horrible childhoods. Still others are overcome with feelings of betrayal that they don't know how to deal with. When someone doesn't have a friend to confide in or some other outlet for his or her emotions, things can get pretty bad. There is a reason, no matter how wicked someone seems, for what people do. It's horrible that people can make themselves believe hateful things, but I've found that the meanest people are usually the most sad. There is a void in these people - a feeling of rejection, hurt, and deep sadness that consumes their lives. We need to work with these people and help them understand where their thoughts and feelings are coming from, and whether or not they are consistent with reality.

Psychopaths. Psychopaths are born without empathy, feelings and remorse towards others. They just can't help being the way they are. Their brain works different from the normal people. So, if they kill somebody even their loved ones, they don't feel any regret or remorse. Different psychopaths have different desires and pleasures that drive them to kill people without any feelings attached

I could not even begin to understand what would make someone kill their family...I just cant even fathom the thought. I think anyone who takes someones life ( not in self defense) should have to live out all their mistakes in hell for eternity...A constant rewind of the worst moments...and no shelter for the pain.

I'm not a psychologist, so I don't know too much about the subject, but from my perspective it's definitely madness.
As to the 'reward', I really don't know.
