Grey oil means you got water in there and the oil needs to be changed immediately. Otherwise I change my oil once per season, but I have a small lawn that only takes about 20 minutes to mow.

I change the oil in my lawnmowers every 20 or so hours of use (for me that's every 5 times I mow) - I use straight-30 weight oil designed for lawnmowers.

At the very least change it before mowing season every year or you'll be buying a new mower the next year.

Check your air filter. Especially if it's a "Yard Machine" brand. A lot of mowers don't require as much air flow until they get warmed up. Once they get hot, they'll cut out very abruptly if they don't have enough air flow. If you get a lot of airborne dust and debris and your mower uses a paper air filter like the one in your car, fit a scotch brite pot scrubber over teh air filter to catch the big stuff so you don't have to change out the filter all the time. just shake out the scotch brite before each time you use the mower.

B&S engins are the same as one from your car. If you don't change the oil, it will die.
