It's a bit confusing to a novice football viewer when they start talking about the # of seeds and stretches now that the football regular season is nearing an end. Who can explain in simple terms what goes on in the playoff picture? I'm a Seattle girl and I know the Hawks have won their division, but don't they still need to win the rest of their games? Serious replies only. Thanks!

There are 6 seeds in each conference. Four go to the division winners and two go to the two wild card teams.
Then the seeds are where you will be positioned in the playoffs.
The #1 and #2 seed get the first week of the playoffs off. Then the #3 seed will play the #6 seed and the #4 will play the #5 in the first week.

The seeds are based on their overall record (and tiebreakers, if needed) as relative to the conference
The highest ranked seed will always play the lowest ranked seed in a matchup (3vs.6, 4vs.5), just like in a tournament (NCAA, tennis, etc.)
Also, the higher seed of each game will get the home game over the lower seed

After the first week, the #1 seed will play the lowest seed to make it past the first week, and the #2 plays the other one, both at home.

In the conference championship, the highest seed gets the home game

In the Super Bowl, the seeds won't determine anything at all, as the game is played at a (hopefully) neutral site

Seed is basically another term for ranking.
The lower the seed the higher ranked the team is.....
In the NFL the 4 division champions are seeded 1 thru 4 by their record.
the 2 wild cards are 5 and 6 seed,, chosen by the 2 teams that did not win their division with the best records in the conference.
This happens separately and independent of the 6 seeds in the other conference.
So Seattle can be no lower than 4th seed,
Right now they are 3 could move up to 2 or down to 4. Moving up to 2, if Seattle wins out and GB loses 2 would mean they would get a first round by and play either the 3 seed (3 beat 6) or the winner of 4 v 5 (if 6 beat 3) in the semi final.
If they stay 3 they will play the 6 seed (2nd wild card), then go to play the 2 seed in the semi' (which would be in GB, more than likely).
If they fall to 4 they would play the 5 seed(1st wildcard) and if they win go play the 1 seed unless the 3 seed lost to 6 then they would go play the 2 seed.
I hope that has helped.

stc - seattle is 9-4

Seed, with respect to the playoffs in NFL or other sport, refers to the position in the playoff bracket that team will hold or holds. For instance, if there were a two round playoff with four teams, you would have a 1 seed, a 2 seed, 3 seed, and a 4 seed.

Example

1 seed
vs
4 seed

2 seed
vs
3 seed

winner of 1 & 4 seed game plays the winner of 1 & 3 seed game to determine champion

this is simple, but it can be a little more complex depending on the number of teams

hope this helps

The seed is your playoff position the first and second seeds get a first round bye. the 3 and 6 seeds play each other and the 4 and 5 seeds play each other with the winners moving on to the next round. the number 1 seed will play the lowest remaining seed from the first week. The winners of each division's are automatically in the playoffs. You only need to keep winning for position because the higher seed gets to play at home.

No they don't need to win any more games.

They way the Seeding works is, there are 2 conferences, AFC & NFC, and each conference is broken up into 4 Divisions. So you will have the 4 division winners in each conference regardless of their record in playoffs, as long as they win there division they are in. Than you have 2 wildcard teams in each conference that havent won their divisions with best records that also qualify. Giving you 6 teams in each conference that are in the playoffs. The top 2 teams in conference according to best records, get a 1st round bye. The top Team in each conference gets home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Win or go Home. Hope that helps

Coaches really don't care if they win or lose a pre-season game. The goal is to test and rate players in real game situations against other real players. Add that to the fact the top players play little or not at all and the 'coolness' or value to the consumer is way below that of a regular season game. Teams have for a long time forced season ticket holders to buy tickets to these games even though they don't want them. (I've never figured out how they get away with charging their best customers more than everyone else, but that's a different story.) As a result, there are often extremely cheap tickets to pre-season games available on the ticket exchange sites for pre-season games.

you seed teams for a tournament. the higher seeds have better records, or in the case of the nfl are division champs. the two wild cards will be the bottom seeds. the division winners will be ranked, or seeded, by best record.

seattle will probably get the 3rd seed in the nfc and host a playoff game vs. the last seeded team. that will be the worst of the two wild card teams. ya'll should win that game and advance to a road game vs the packers or cowboys for the right to play in the nfc champioship game. your season probably ends there.

Their rank in the league.
#1 seed is the best team (best record)
#6 seed is the lowest team to make the playoffs

it is the rank of position they have. The best team will have the #1 seed and all of the benefits of playing at home, while the last will have to play at will wherever.
