Yes, I would think they do, because somebody might show up.

Yes. There are plenty of people that show up late for movies. I work in a theatre and if a movie has been released for quite some time or has little buzz surrounding it then it is usually empty but the movie plays no matter what. THE SHOW MUST GO ON.

They usually have to have a certain number of people in the audience to run a film. Here at the local theater, it used to be at least five. I know that because I have had a film shown just for me!

I wouldn't think that they run a film if no tickets have been sold. In fact, if not enough people show up, they will reimburse the ticket price. Most of the money is made in concessions, so they want an audience that makes it worth their while. At least it's that way in our theaters.

EDIT: From what I've read above, I suppose that multiplexes must run on different rules.

Yes they have to because if they immediately put up another movie then it would be hard for people to come in at the right time. Then, that movie wouldn't probably have anyone either because no one was givin the time to know it was playing. Once they make a schedule they can't change it because it would confuse many people who already had plans.

i doubt that will ever happen, because if its not an entertaining movie then it does not make the theatres.
