My husband says that the newer furnaces are electronic, so you dont have to light the pilot.

this is a tricky question...there are so many different furnaces out there...if it is central heating a newer model ignites it self by turning the thermostat to heat and of course raising the degrees ...if nothing happens it could be that the exhaust fan that removes any un burned gasses that maybe in the furnace as a safety precaution is not working if the fan doesn't work the furnace will not light and the fan will have to be replaced...the fan is mostly above center in the middle of the furnace behind the cover it is about 4" x 4" big...good luck.

Since it's a "newer" furnace the owners manual/instruction book should be around somewhere, try to locate it and read up on it. The instructions should actually be printed on the furnace or furnace door somewhere also. There is usually a knob that has like 3 settings on it (on, off and light). Usually you set it to light and hold it down while lighting the pilot and hold it down for a few seconds while the pilot is lit. Then just turn the knob to on and it should stay lit.

Very few - if any - furnaces made in the last 10 years have a standing pilot. Water heaters still have standing pilots because the flame is not wasted (it does send it's BTUs to the water).
If it's a new furnace that's not coming on, make sure it have power & gas - or call the original installer back to check it.

Most furnaces are labeled with lighting instructions. Have you looked closely for this. Best to call the gas company and be safe if you aren't sure of what you're doing.

a lot of the "newer furnaces" have an electronic ignitor, no pilot to worry about, as long as the gas and power are on, nothing in the computer stuff is malfunctioning, all you should have to do is set t-stat to heat, turn to the temp you want and thats it, your done.

Most new furnaces don't have pilot lights that need to be lit. Are you sure yours does?

A newer furnace should have printed instructions on the equipment.

If you are not familiar with the procedure, call a HVAC or Fuel oil company to do it. No sense blowing yourself up.
