Why is any substance liquid. It depends on the melting point (or the melting range) and the pressure. Most materials can remain solid at temperatures above the melting point if they are under pressure. This does not work for water because water is one of very few materials which are less dense as a solid than as a liquid (that's why ice floats).

ethanol is an alcohol CH3CH2OH. the intermolecular forces present on this molecule are London and Hydrogen Bonds (H Bonds) The strongest intermolecular force is H Bonds, which means is the hardest to break. Since H Bonds is the strongest, and this molecule has it, it takes more time for the force to break. Thats why its melting point is higher than normal Carbon molecula like Ethane.
