also, do you think the renaissance was a distance break with the past or a natural progression

I think it was a natural progression. I would classify it as the transition period between medieval and early modern Europe, and despite what the people living in this era thought, they were very much in debt to the people of the medieval era.

The Middle Ages sequed into the Renaissance, which is considered the beginning of the modern era. Johan Huizinga"s The Waning of the Middle Ages contends pretty convincingly that the line of demarcation between the two eras was quite blurred. I doubt that anyone in the Renaissance thought that a new era of human history was beginning, even though the focus was increasingly toward new or rediscovered ideas.
