If yes, both men and women? Age cutoff?

Personally I think we shouldn't NEED to. People should WANT to fight for their country. We shouldn't HAVE to force them into it! They should be proud to fight! But if we were to say that, they'd make it out as if we are victimizing the youth of America or whatever.

What do oyu thinl?

By the way this is coming from a 15 year old who doesn't exactly know everything about the military so take it easy. LOL.

Hate the draft. During the Vietnam war, the wealthy and middle-class could go to college and get a deferment or pull some strings and get into the Guard and not go overseas (not all did this, but quite a few did). If you were blue-collar, lower-class, or poor, you fought and some got maimed, and others died.

If all would fight that were drafted, it would be different, but the draft is a classist system. If we do have a draft, yes, women should be drafted, and just like men, if they pass the requirements, they should be sent into combat, since women in the military are now doing 80% of the available jobs, and are eligible for 90% of the career areas anyway.

I like the way a number of European countries handle it-they require that after their equivalent of high school, all students have to join the military for two years or work with a program for 2 years similar to the Peace Corps or Vista. Every citizen has to contribute to their society or to a good cause.

H.R. 393 is at present interior the single hundred and tenth/111th Congress, proposed via Rep. Charles Rangel (D-ny). This new draft could draft every person between the a protracted time of 18 and 40 two, male or woman, for defense tension carrier. and there is not any college EXEMPTION. they're going to draft you in case you're in college! the only exemptions are past carrier of a minimum of 6 months (I have been given my Honorable Discharge in 2003 after 4y2m of time interior the army) and enrollment is a protection tension officer academy (West factor, Annapollis, etc., etc.).

I am 56 yo.
On my 18th birthday(1969) I registered for the draft in Hackensack New Jersey
I got my draft card.
I carried my draft card in my wallet.
I was happy to have my draft card because the drinking age in NY was 18 at the time and I only lived 8 miles from NYC(whoopee).
And draft card was THE I.D. for drinking in NY STATE
In fact...it was against the law NOT to have draft card.

We had the draft hanging over our heads.

My old man travelled around the country cause he finished his navy enlistment...Korean broke out ...and they were looking for warm bodies. So he stayed one step ahead of the draft board until things cooled down.
(i.e he got married and had kids....I was born in 1951 ...my brother in 1952...hostilities in Korea ended 1953)

Elvis got drafted.

It would take a lot of doing to just get the infrastructure up and running for a draft....

and then there is the issue of pay.

can't imagine paying a conscript the same as volunteer.

The SH** has really got to hit the fan to bring the draft back.

ELVIS GOT DRAFTED.

We lived with it.
Ain't the end of the world.

But I am not big on the draft.

"The draft board is debating if they'd like to take my life
I'd sooner take a wife and raise a child or two
Wouldn't you?"

No, the draft should not be reinstated.

Our military is very strong right now, and spread all over the world.

If such a situation appears in which all our troops are recalled to home to protect our borders from a direct attack, and we are still outnumbered, then, and only then, would a draft make any sense at all. And even then I would support calls for volunteers over any sort of draft.

No - the only time a draft was needed was to fight a "war" that was not supported by the majority of the citizens.

And it was the most unequal program the government ever implemented.

Nope. No more. This is a free country. Forced conscription is a European tradition. It has no place in our freedom loving society. Those of us who love freedom will fight for everyone else. No problem. Draft dodgers were a real pain.

I want to say no, but sadly I think we are heading in that direction. I don't agree with drafting women into the military. If I can't be drafted by the NFL based on gender why should I be drafted for anything else?

We already have it. It's called a 'back-door' draft. The National Guard was supposed to protect our country WITHIN our country. They were never supposed to be deployed overseas. So though these men and women of the National Guard voluntarily joined to protect our country, they never in their wildest dreams thought they'd be deployed to another country to fight a war.

They supposedly already have a bill in congress.
I think the only way it will be reinstated is if Bush is dumb enough to attack Iran.In which case we will have our hands full! I hope Bush realizes that attacking Iran now would be seen as a WAR of agression for which he could be prosecuted as a war criminal!

We have a draft. It's called selective service. There is no need to actively call recruits. We have enough volunteers.

However, no we should not have a draft. We should have a two year mandatory service after high school graduation for every able bodied American.
