it all depends on the child. my son slept through the night at 4 months. but this one my daughter is just about 10 months and still wakes up in the middle of the night. I have given her cereal i have tried waking her up before i go to sleep and give her a bottle i have tried keeping her up later but nothing seems to work including letting her cry and she doesn't sleep during the day either except for 1 or 2 / 10-15 minute naps.
if you haven't tried some of things i have tried then you should give them a try otherwise good luck just be happy not to have my job as a truck driver and be on the road all day with only a couple of hours of sleep. at least i get a little more than what i did when she was 5 months. don't worry she will eventually sleep more. I also had to put her in my bed to get her to go back to sleep at night and she is not a heavy sleeper the slightest move would wake her up now with her getting older she is sleeping heavier but nothing compared to my son. for me i think it is the difference between boys and girls.
good luck

Science shows that a baby won't sleep through the night until he is about 6 months old. I had the same problem and my doctor told me that everytime i put him to bed i need to make sure that he has eaten very well, he has a clean diaper on, and he is comfortable. Once you do that and he still wakes up he told me to ignore him and he will go back to bed. I hate to say it but it does work. My baby and I sleep in the same room but he sleeps in his crib so when he wakes up in the middle of the night I ignore him and before I know it he is asleep again. My son is 13 months old so I feel your pain. Your 18 month is probably waking up in the middle of the night because he hears your other baby. But try it and see what happens and if it doesn't improve then definitly talk to their doctors and see what they say.

what i you should do (it worked on all the babys i know) is put the baby on your shoulder sitting on a chair and put the head near your neck but dont suffacate it! and start humming inside hmmmmmmmhhhhhmmmmmmmmhhhhhmmmmmmmhUM and repeat it a song in spanish aly aly lululu patitrace a booroo but it just sounds like that i dont know how to spell it ohhh....yeah and give him a bottle of warm milk the rock and hum because of the vibrations he goes to sleep and do it every night for a month then just lie down with him at night time and he'll go to sleep reg. by himself after a while.

They are growing and need the food at night. Not something you want to force them to stop doing whether 5 months old or 18 months old. Growing and learning takes a lot of energy. Yes it's hard sometimes when you are tired having to get up for them but it's all part of being a Mom. Plus if you do respond to their needs they will grow up to be very secure, if you ignore them and their needs they could develop one or several complexes of varying degrees (overeating for fear that food won't be there when they want it, insecure, clingy, overly independent, won't ask for what he/she needs for fear of not getting it, etc...) Feed them, love them and go to bed earlier yourself!

I agree with the answer above! My son never slept through the night until he was about a year and a half. Some babies are just lighter sleepers!

could be any # of reasons. It is cold and flu season maybe she just don't feel good babies don't have to show signs of being ill to just not be feeling good. My 15 day old baby has been super restless the last 2 nights he sneezes all night wakes up every 1-2 hours acts hungry only eats a 1oz bottle. Babies go thru stages where they don't sleep as well. My other kids are 11 and 9 both of em went thru stages up till age two where every so often they woke up a few times a night.
