I used mine with antibaterial dish soap and have this little suction cup sponge holder so that it get air on both sides. I toss it in the dishwasher about once a week on the top rack.
I usually toss it when it gets any weird smell, or leaves aweird smell on my hands.
If you are using it to hand wash your dishes daily you are better off going out and buying a stack of cheap wash clothes and a clean one each day. Sponges do easily harbor bateria.

If your worried about it being dangerously nasty toss it in the dishwasher preferably on the heated dry setting if equipped. I also rinse my dish sponges out and put them in the microwave while they are still damp from time to time. Usually about 30 seconds is enough. I still buy new sponges every couple of months I just like to keep them clean in the meantime.

Sponges are notorious for harboring bacteria--you should instead use a brush that you can let sit in diluted bleach solution after each use--if you could see what is growing in that sponge at a microscopic level, you'd never use one ever again...

I would get rid of it NOW and never use another. After the first use, they hold bacteria. I would never use one to wash my dishes. Go to K-Mart and get some Martha Stewart utility cloths. They can be washed in your regular white load with bleach. Change them often, 2 or 3 tiimes a week.

Disinfect it daily in the microwave. Set on high for 30 seconds. Or bleach it every day.
Even after doing that, I replace them monthly, anyway.
They are cheap, and it looks nicer than a ragged, old, grimy, stained sponge.

I keep mine until they fall apart, but I throw them in the washing machine with my cloths and towels every few days. A little bleach will kill the nasties, and try drying them on Hot if you didn't use bleach.

If you use bleach in the water, you can wait until it disintegrates.
