When you get your tree, cut off a couple of inches and set it in a bucket of HOT water with a dollop of corn syrup and chlorine bleach. The hot water helps loosen up the sap and let water get up into the tree, and the syrup and bleach help to preserve it. If you can, get some tree preserative, it is usually available where you bought your tree. If you already have it in the stand, pour HOT water into it, and let it soak it up. You may have to refill it a couple of times the first day.

People have all sorts of remedies and things to put in the water for trees and flowers. You are wasting your time. The trees will absorb water for a few days but the water never makes it to the top or tips of the tree. Is is no longer a living tree. As soon as it was cut, all of it's life lines were severed and is dying. If you took a 2X4 from home depot it will absorb water just like the tree. This is what I call the sponge effect.. Keep it watered as long as it takes up water, you will notice after couple of days it stops. Keep it in a cool place and it should last about 10 days or so. Most of the trees we get are usually cut around Thanks giving and stored in the cold Canadian air for a few weeks

Water alone is fine. When you buy the tree, you should cut a small amount off the end to get rid of the "sealed over" end. This way it will absorb water. many times, adding things to the water will cause bacteria to grow and even mold.

I always add a spoonful of sugar and a drop of bleach in mine and it keeps it fresh for weeks. The bleach kills bacteria in the water while the sugar acts as an energy source for the tree.

I honestly dont know it if really affects the tree or not, but I add two aspirins on the first day and one aspirin each time I fill the water up. Got that from my parents and we always did that. I know we didnt get a lot of the thistles falling off, if that helps.

Nothing, at my house we just check the water level every morning and if its low we just put more water in. We just use plan tap water and our tree stays fresh all through the Holiday.

i add orange crush soda if i can get it. Years ago a relative worked for the company and learned it is the best possible thing to add to the water. Our tree stayed fresh and green a month that year. ginger ale is second best
