Find a quiet space, sit comfortable, close your eyes, then observe your breathing, which means to FEEL it go in and out. Don't manipulate or change your breathing or try to make it someway it is not naturally --- just keep your focus on feeling your breathing happening in your body. Now it will happen that you will lose touch with this feeling of your breathing, when you lose touch with this feeling, then what's happened is that you got lost in thinking. Be aware that this happened, don't analyze it. You can simply state - i was thinking. Then return your focus back to feeling your breathing. You repeat like this the whole session, which should be done at least 30 mintues, preferably twice per day.
Don't be attached to getting any result, like psychic gifts, or in beating yourself up if you get lost in thoughts. The benefit of practicing meditation, what you get from it, is becoming the observer of yourself, versus being the thinker. The normal way of most people is to be 'lost in thoughts' as the thinker, and thus they are not aware of any other possible reality. To get a result you must practice regular and it takes some time to get used to doing the practice. The thinking will come in heavy at first and every excuse will be given to say this is not working or this is not worth it, etc. Stick with it twice a day if possible for at least 3 weeks, then it might become a habit you don't want to miss. Slowly, you get results. When you start to get results, then you will know why you want to continue to do it. But before that happens, it's sort of like 'forcing yourself' to do it. Keep it simple, just do it.

1. Don't do it while driving;
2. Don't do it while on the clock @ work;
3. In fact, don't do it while needing to pay attention to anything at all, but...;
4. DO IT!
:-)
The biggest thing to remember is that anyone who tells you that you should be doing "this" or "that" instead of "the other" - they don't know what they're talking about. They've taken to dogmatizing the practice, and their advice should be avoided at all costs.
There are many different approaches to meditation, and just as many different individual techniques. You have to search and find out what feels right for you, and what works best to help you attain whatever it is you're trying to attain. Some folks want to learn how to still the mind and become "pure awareness" (probably the most common form of meditation) while others seek to focus on an image of God in hopes of becoming closer to the divine.
There are any number of paths, but only one that truly fits your footsteps. Nobody else can tell you which one that might be, you have to discover it for yourself. The information is out there, STUDY! :-)

Start with something simple. I started with deep breathing. Breathing out all negative, breathing in all positive, i.e. Out - stress, In - claim; Out - fear, In - love; Out - sadness, In - serenity; Out - trying to control, In - acceptance.
