I'm assuming when you say, smarts you, mean knowledge.

I have a quote, that I love. I have it framed and displayed for all to see, in my dining room.

I framed it for my brother-in-law. He is a Professor and considers himself to be smarter than God.

"Never mistake knowledge for wisdom.
One helps you make a living.
The other helps you make a life."
James Oppenheim

I do agree wisdom comes through age and experience, but with out the common sense to use, wisdom and smarts/knowledge, they become almost useless.

Good question.

I do agree. To me, 'smarts' is what we learn from books or formal education. Anyone of any age can be smart. Wisdom is what can be attained if one takes the education - the smarts - and combines it with life experiences, good common sense and maturity. Wisdom is rarely seen in a young person.

Nope, wisdom comes from God. I've seen 20 year old kids with more wisdom than some attain in a lifetime.
Anyone can attain knowledge thru experience but the ability to learn and apply it to life is a whole different animal.

learning makes knowledge, but knowledge (or "smarts") alone does not make wisdom. There are plenty of learned people who are not wise, and some of them actually make it to leadership! And some elderly people that I know don't have it either. I think knowledge, plus experience, intuition and common sense combine to make a sort of wisdom, but real wisdom seems to be innate. I have known a few wise children. It also can instead be acquired through knowledge of the self and our connection with all things in the universe, but it is a journey that lasts a lifetime, and beyond.

Knowledge and wisdom are linked but different. You can be a genius with books and knowledge, but be a complete fool in life.
Or you can have street smarts, gaining your wisdom from age, from experience, and the school of hard knocks.....yet you can be as dumb as a brick.

A good saying is,
~Knowledge Speaks, but Wisdom Listens~

Yes, I agree with you. Wisdom is not necessarily taught per say, but learned if that makes sense. Smarts can be gained through memorization from books for example. Wisdom is gained from personal experience from one's own life.

Wisdom & smarts are not the same, in my opinion. Wisdom is gained as we mature. We can be smart, as in knowledge, but yet lack common sense.

Somewhat I think. ''Smarts'' is just a slang term for common sense. Wisdom can be learned from experience.

Smarts is a computers capabilities -- wisdom is how full it's memories banks are and how it handles the software.

I am in total agreement with slk29406 on this one. Did you ever hear that expression "Wise beyond their years" ? Wisdom does come with aging and of course maturity. CJ
