No. They are not insured to allow people to dig through the trash because you may get hurt. And once it is in the dump, it becomes their property, whether it might prove useful to you or not. Sorry.

The county dump let me search the scrap metal pile for an old water heater. I needed to make trough for my calves.
I doubt in the big cities they would allow you do salvage anything.

Yes, and it's call "dumpster diving". As long as you don't leave a mess behind, I'm sure is ok. My friends and I do it, and you should see what we have fixed and/or created, with the junk that other people throw away. It's a very nice bussines. Good luck!!!!!

most dump it sites have authorised people, to collect the dumped rubbish.
check with the local authority to get permission, you may have to get a permit.
