Perhaps something like: I am so encouraged and know that my future days are secure because of our people in uniform. I have seen on the TV news scenes of bravery and honor. I send you my thoughts of gratitude and virtual hugs. Be well and return home to us who love you.

You may want to get verification on sending letters overseas.

They just announced that letters addresses to "Any Soldiers" and not a specific name will be destroyed or returned due to security because of anthrax treats.

I read it just this week either on CNN or Yahoo website.

Think of those men & women over there who won't be coming home this Christmas. Some of them may never come home at all.

Think of the families that are waiting here for them to return....praying that they're safe & that there will be another Christmas for them.

Think of these people as someone's kids, brothers, sisters, moms & dads.

Think of them as friends & you'll know what to write. ;)

Start with thank you's for defending our country and tell about yourself. Your interests, family, school/work. They are out of the normal world WE live in, so they will love to hear about you too.

Thank them for their service. Basically, because they volunteered, the rest of us don't have to. Most other countries (much of Europe for example) have service requirements for everyone when they turn 18.

Just tell them that you are thinking and praying for them. Tell them you are proud that they are giving up their time to serve the American public. Tell them that you hope that they will be home soon with their families.

You need to use encouraging words. Things like "good job." and "keep doing what your doing" seem make people feel good about themselves. Put yourselves into their shoes. If you were a soldier what would make you feel good about yourself when your millions of miles away from your friends, family, and not to mention your comfort zone.
