I heard recently that yams can boost fertility in women . But I cannot find yams in my area.
Would sweet potatoes do the same thing?

Yams and sweet potatoes are not the same thing, not at all.

If what you heard about yams is true (doubtful) it would not be true of sweet potatoes. Different genus.

No, they're not the same thing, but most people in the US use both of the terms for sweet potatos. Finding yams in the US can be kind of difficult. I'd try to find out what causes the fertility boost and then see if sweet potatos contain it too. Good luck!

I've had luck finding yams at exotic food markets (ones that carry African food) and once in a while I can find them at large Asian grocers.

Yams are from the Tropics, and are not related to the southern grown sweet potatoe. Therefore I do not think the southern sweet potatoe holds any fertility benefits.

Sweet Potato and Yam Health Information
Sweet potatoes are relatively low in calories and have no fat. They are rich in beta-carotene , having five times the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A in one sweet potato, as well as loaded with potassium. These nutrients help to protect against heart attack and stroke. The potassium helps maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body cells, as well as normal heart function and blood pressure.

Wild Mexican "yams" which are related to the sweet potato, seem to have anti-weight-gain, anti-cancer, and anti-aging properties, according to Dr. Earl Mindell.

True yams do not contain as much Vitamin A and C as sweet potatoes
