A bean is the embryo for a new bean plant. If a bean isn't alive then it certainly has the capacity for life. So I guess it depends where you consider life to begin. When the plant creates the seed or when the seed becomes a plant.

It's alive!
It's aliiiive!
If it were not alive, then it would not produce a plant by just adding water and nutrients.
To the Mexican jumping bean answer - the beans jump because they have the larva of an insect inside them, so technically, there is life there, the bean would be dead by that stage, having been partially eaten from the inside.

The mexican jumping beans have little worms inside, so no the bean itself is not alive. I know that not the questions you asked but thats what someone replied so I thought I'd let you know :)

Beans fulfill the all points to a living thing: They reproduce without help (other than viruses) , inherit their genome and so on - as higher plants they are living things

Of course it's a living thing.
It really does RESPIRATION, even though very slow.
It's been proved by a laboratory practice in the respiration topic.
Since bean is a living thing, so it can grow to be a sprout.

If it has not yet go through process that can kill it then yes a bean is alive. Even when it is just sitting there it is respiring. In certain conditions it can go dormant, but it is still alive.

Hmm, both answers are feasible. I'd say its a living thing because it is made of cells. If it wasn't a living thing, then you'd have something like spontaneous generation when a plant grows out of it.
