Puck-Don't you feel you wasted your money if theres no winner?NFL very rarely has a tie and soccer is boring enough and they have shootouts in the World Cup Playoffs.I was just wondering if they have a OT game end like Pitt/Flyers a few years back(5OT)and they have a game that night aren't you gonna risk injury if that was the case?I'm not a huge fan of the shootout either but its better than kissing your sister I feel.

I hate ties, but I hate the shootout.

All things being the way they are, I'd suggest going back to the old way of awarding a point to both teams for a tie after regulation.

In the playoffs let them play until someone scores.

My mind hasn't been able to come up with a way to solve the problem of tie games without coming up with some hokey idea. The current means is acceptable until another way is invented.

I like OT. The game is still being played. Shootout is a stunt and isn't game play. Other sports either accept ties after an OT or they keep playing. And I hate three point games. All games should have the same number of points available to win. Accept a winner and give them 2 points if a goal is scored in OT. Do not give the loser a point. Play 20 minutes and then call the game a draw and award one point to each team.
Pro soccer accepts ties. Pro football accepts ties after an OT. Baseball and basketball play until someone wins. I agree with the endless overtime in the playoffs but the shootout is a Bush League publicity grab and has nothing to do with the game of hockey. I think introducing it and the extra point cheapened the sport of hockey.

Can't say I feel the need for there to be a winner in order for me to get my money's worth. I grew up with hockey ties. One of the greatest games ever played ended in a tie (Habs vs Red Army).
Back when the WHA first started signing players a kid named Mark Napier played for the Toronto Marlies. The Marlies played about half their home games in Brantford and I went to most of the games. Napier signed a contract to play in the WHA for the following season while still playing for the Marlies. The game after it was announced the Marlies played St Catharines in Brantford. To protest Napier being in the lineup, St Catharines had all their sweaters resewn so the numbers were on the front and the crest was on the back and for the first twenty minutes did nothing but ice the puck once they got it. That was the only time in my life I paid to see a game and felt ripped off. (I was 14 at the time so $5 meant a fair bit to me considering it was equal to me working six hours at my part time job).

Of all of the things they have put into place following the lockout, the shootout is by far the worst. I will back up all of the points that Puck brought up, 3 point games, etc and add that this stunt actually decided an NHL game.

That stuff is fine in an all-star competition or if the guy has the skills to pull it off during an actual game.

I cant believe hockey fans would rather see a dull, boring, 'kissing sister' tie than have a shootout. Its the REGULAR season, for pete's sake, and its only one point. Even if your team loses, its still infinitely more entertainment than just just stopping the game with tie score. Remember, pro sports is just another form of entertainment, so why not make it as entertaining as possible?

The shootout is great.t gives teams a chance show their talent. It's only regular season, so insteand of a tie (that would be stupid) and instead of multiple overtimes (like the playoffs) they have a talent/skills contest. If one team's players and goalie are awesome that night they get the extra point. It also is very exciting to watch.

I'm not crazy about the shootout, but it's better than a tie, which to me is kinda a waste of 60 min of playing time.

Yeah, but did you see that Rod Brind'Amour shot that popped up in the air, hit the Philly goalie in the back and rolled into the net to give Carolina a 6-5 win Saturday?

OK, me go to box. Feel shame for 2 minutes.

I can't see why they can't play one 20-minute OT, and if it's still tied after that, game over. Playing 4X4 for that long of a period should result in a goal being scored. 2 pts. for the win, 1 pt. each for a tie. Just like grandma used to bake it.

I watch Ice hockey in the UK and we play 5 mins of OT if it is a draw and if it is atill a draw they leave it.

But belive me it is such an anti climax where as shootouts allow you to see the true skill of a player.
