A state is a sovereign entity. We are the UNITED States because the states are united under ONE Constitution. Under this Constitution every state is guaranteed a republican(representative ) form of government. States can have different laws but those laws cannot violate the federal law. Every state can send Representatives and Senators and has the right to paricipate in Presidential elections. The laws that the legislature passes, the Supreme Court rules on and the President executes apply to ALL 50 states so we ARE united. Read the Constitution for further clarification.

Every State has the right to make laws for their Citizens. Of course there are some laws that apply to all States. But it is suppose to make it more fair. Good Question. Some States are more lighter and some more strict. I really didn't think about this before. Just seemed natural.

In the 1770's, when the 13 colonies were trying to attain their rights as Englishmen, the Crown tried to split them into antagonist groups, much as England had split the states of Germany for over 400 years and preventing the formation of a unified German country.
The founding fathers knew that England was playing the old "divide and conquer" game and from the very beginng knew that they had to remain united or the cause would fail.
The fact that state laws vary is really irrelevant.

It was done so that we could have order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
This is some times forgotten Amendment
Amendment X
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or
to the people yes to the people
THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT!
We the people must stand up for our selves and take back our land.

way back when, the states were pretty much equal in the laws. then they fought against federal interference so they could be as corrupt as they want, and they are. now they can really control people, but its all money. there is no justice when money is involved. the only way its united is the government against the people. on the federal, state and local levels.

While states can pass their own laws, no law can override Federal Law.
Federal law is primary, states law is secondary.

I think you know. Now answer me this; why assume America is the United States? America consists of two continents and at least 17 independent countries. North America alone has three countries. So why is it when people hear America, they think the United States of America?

becuase although the states can make their own laws on certain issues, the federal government has the ultimate control over anything and the supreme court can overturn states rulings.
