So I peruse the for sale ads and see some weird crosses.

Why would you purposely breed a TWH to say an arab etc.

Or other crosses

What crosses that shouldn't be have you seen and made you go ummmmm.........

How about a Quarter horse and a Percheron you either get a large neck and head like the Percheron and a small hind end or the other way around a large hind end and a small quarter horse neck and head I have send one at my barn and they are kinda strange looking

We had a client at the vet's that had a TWHXarab....it got a nasty laceration once, and my vet came back and commented that it was funny watching the mental battle...."OOO....I gotta freak out....I'm an arab...Noooo....must stay calm....I'm a walker....NOOOOO....gottta freak....Noooo...must stay calm......." Anyway, I guess there are people that are trying to make that a fad....they call them "Windwalkers". Myself...I don't see it. But OK...for an odd cross that worked....how about twhXandalusian. He got the andalusian looks, and the twh gait. He was geeeeorgous. Now....odd balls....Norwegian Fjords with just about anything. But particularly QH....to quote the 25th letter of the alphabet..."Y"?????? Or QH to twh....terrible cross IMHO. (Not to say it CAN'T work....but I've seen a lot that it DIDN'T.) App X Paint....a motley colored up mess...... Now, for a gorgeous cross that did work (and two very similar breeds, so it ought to work) A twhXrocky cross. He is absolutely gorgeous. Big, heavier built like some of the old type walkers, but with a more refined head, and that stunning silver dapple color. And to top it off, he is sweet, kind, and very smooth gaited. A customer of ours rides him, he's got to be at least 70, and probably has to have a ladder to get on him, but what a hoss. :O)

The barn I grew up at bred - deep breath - Saddlebred & westphalian babies - ON PURPOSE, and they made - Sea Monsters -
the stud was nice- the westphalian -,the mare - a saddlebred -was a wreck, that was lame & poor tempered. They had these ungodly long necks, long backs and crooked **** legs. There was only one that came out sorta nice, and
was moderately successful in the dressage ring, though he definitely had conformation issues.
Most were a little empty upstairs.
Having lived through that experience,I move and my farrier - before I moved to her barn and got to know her - was rumoured to have a Saddlebred / belgian cross. My eyes rolled back in my head and it started to hurt.Flashbacks started coming. Then I saw him & got to ride him.Yes he is big,but the saddlebred refined him very nicely. And he can MOVE.You can look at him in the pasture and definitely pass over him,but then watching him go,its phenomenal! theres nothing clunky about him! Hes schooling 3rd level & Jean Luc Corrneille LOVES him.
On the other hand, the same horse has a half brother - and its alll wrong.
Ive seen a phenomenal saddlebred / thoroughbred cross - light and very "airy".Beautiful in the dressage ring.
I saw a standardbred & quarter horse cross that made me want strangle someone for that irresponsible breeding!
Walkaloosa's? Uhhh hmm NO.
And to all those irresponsible individuals who breed HYPP +/+ - and even -/+ horses to other stock breeds, just because they can & so they can get registered get out of their QH studs - STOP - talk about crosses that shouldnt be!
cool question

arabs are crossed with TWH in an attempt to get a more refined gaited horse that can travel long distances. They are often good endurance horses. I prefer fox trotter/arab crosses for this myself as they tend to have more endurance (fox trotter and arabs are both known for it) and tend to be more sure footed.

Someone wanted another yahoo ansers person to breed their quarter horse/draft mix to an arab stallion. I think this mix would be a mistake since the foal could inherit the mass of the mare with the stallions fine leg bones. This would create a horse that could easily break its own legs if used to work cattle.

But my all time favorite is a welsh cob (stocky type) mix crossed with a paso fino. I honestly think that it was one of the oddest horses I have ever seen. Paso fino neck and legs, welsh body and head.

Horse crosses that shouldn't be done? I'd say a draft and a pony. I don't agree with a couple of the respondents on the crosses they mentioned. The Saddlebred/Arab cross is the National Show Horse, and is very lovely. There is nothing wrong with that, and Saddlebred/Foxtrotter---Foxtrotters HAVE Saddlebred blood in them already.
Speaking generally, ANY horse that has a bad temperament should NOT ever be bred!

I've seen some off ones!
Percheron x shetland It was UGLY!! Shetty sized drafter with big draft head
Arab x Tinker also UGLY
mustang ASB this one worked
Icelandic x tinker a non gaited conformational nightmare
Norwegian fjord x donkey Cute Mule!!
Lipizzan x TB seen these often, ridden them, not pretty,, not comfy, and spooky as all hell.
Welsh pony sec C x Oldenburg. The ugliest pony in the barn!!
Andalusian x shire had to try this one out, it was kinda nice

I don't understand any crosses between gaited and non gaited. A horse that doesn't know where to put its poor little feet!

**Ediit**
ugh!! Andalusian x tinker again http://images.dhd24.com/16536503_small.jpg

OMG!! Fresian x halflinger!!! too bad no entire photo: http://www.dhd24.com/extra/pferde-anzeiger/pferdemarkt/pferde/freizeitpferd/anzid_8717466.html

OK, I have to jump in. I seen an ad that was 1/2 Paso and 1/2 Appaloosa. I thought that was odd and was telling my friend about the ad on a trail ride. It turns out SHE bought the horse! It was a an accidental breeding, stud got out and jumped a few fences. Owners were terribly upset as they were trying to get the mare breed to her own kind, they didn't know who she was pregnant to until the spotted foal popped out. My friend told me he is the sweetest colt she was ever around. He has a blanket and gaits! Who knew?

I personally don't like a quarab. not saying that they're not talented and successful, but they are polar opposites. they're both versitile, but they are valued for very different qualities. qh are stocky and muscular, and the arab is more refined and dainty. not to mention the difference in temperament and energy.

OK ALSO:
@migizi- plz dont say that arabs and saddlebreds have been ruined by crossing. Have you ever heard of a National Show Horse?? Yah they actually have their own breed. theyre actually exceptional saddleseat horses, and are extremely versitile and talented. We have had crosses that do hunter and western and they consistently go champion.

A friend of mine had a TWH/Percheron/Morgan This was by far the ugliest horse I have ever seen. The only good thing about the horse was she was a rugged extensive trail horse and her owner loved her. This mare had long ears, long slightly swayed back, LONG head, gigantic feet and her body was moderate size. She belonged on Fugly horse, thats for sure

I actuall looked at a horse at one point this fall that the ad said arab cross. Hmmm I thought I'll go take a look. I get there and it is an arab percheron cross...... yeah weird. She had a really dishy face and the bone of a percheron but structurally looked like a big boned arab. She was actually quite pretty. Another odd ball cross I think is a standardbred crossed with a quarterhorse.... why oh why did they do that? lol
