Currently have a 23 gallon tank and may be upgrading to a 38 gallon tank. My 23 gallon tank currently has 4 turban snails,6 hermit crabs and 2 clown fish, with about 30 pounds of live rock. I have had this tank for 1 month now, and am wondering what type of fish I should get for a 23 gallon tank should I decide not to upgrade, or a 38 gallon tank if I choose to upgrade. HELP WILL GREATLY BE APPRECIATED!!!!

Yellow tangs grow to be 7-8 inches long and are very active fish. To give them adequate swimming room, they should be in at least a 55 gallon tank (rectangular) - this would be a 4 foot length of swimming space. A 38 gallon doesn't sound like a "standard" rectangular, so it's probably a bowfront, hex, or corner tank, which has even less horizontal swimming room - these are traditionally taller and narrower than standard tanks. For that reason alone, I would suggest skipping the tang.

If you want a yellow fish with lots of personality and movement, look into a canary blenny. Some other (various colored) species you might consider are cardinalfish, longnose hawkfish, chromis, scissortail gobies, and jawfish, all of which are compatible with your clowns and inverts.

Tangs are the athletes of the ocean, and need ample swimming room. I would suggest housing them in nothing smaller than a 75 gallon, but the bigger the better. If you want to add some yellow to your tank, you may try the Yellow Coris Wrasse, the Yellow Watchman Goby, or the Royal Gramma.

Yellow tangs appreciate a good growth of green algae. They don't want brown algae. It is helpful if you have some green algae growing in your tank before you drop in a tang or butterfly fish, however they are great choices for a nice aquarium.
