First of all, people's mind work VERY differently, secondly, it is moderatly common, I have it to a certain extent, Third, there is photoagraphic memory to varying degrees, and (cirdusy of wiki) almost everyone has it some-what, and they are usually classified as follows: 1st-VERY rare, only about 2000 people have this world-wide (out of 6 billion, that is pretty rare) and, with this, the short-term memory centers of the brain are about 10x the size in normal humans, 2nd- a little more common, short-term is 5xish the average human, 3rd- moderatly common, this is most likely what your friend has, brain centers that control short term memory are 3x the size of normal people, and, lastly 4th, the most common, short-term is 1.54239x the size of normal people. and, then there are normals, average joes.

Having a true photographic memory is not that common from what I understand. People may think that they have it, but they may be fooling themselves. Most people translate what they see into a verbal picture and what they think they remember seeing is the verbal account they have told themselves. That is why eye witness accounts in courtroom proceedings are often found to be so unreliable.

i know it runs in my famiy!!!
i notice details that other people would never notice!!!
and if i like take a snapshot of something in my mind and if someone brings it up and we disagree over the details, i will argue it to the end because i have that exact moment pictured in my mind!!!!
ya, i guess it would be like total recall!!!
but fear not, i only use my superpowers for the good of mankind!!!
and i always win!!!
not braggin, thats just the way it is!!!
note: its well documented, like someone can walk into a room, walk out, then someone rearange articles!!!
then when you come back into the room the person can replace the articles to the exact place they were when they first went into the room!!!
its no magic trick or smoke and mirrors, just plain fact!!!
i think we all have the ability, some just dont have it tuned in!!!

I used to have at school but I had a serious motor cycle accident and scarred the part of the brain that must allow that to happen because it now takes me over a month of intense studying to remember the simplest of things. Weird though, because I now remember things that my mother says happened when I was no more than 6 months old. I'm now 38
