Why is the USA awesome, or why does it suck massively?

I want your opinion on whether you like it or not, and why?

It's both. As Leonard Cohen said, America is the home of the best and the worst. In some ways, it's the greatest country that has ever been. In other ways, it's the most evil empire that has ever existed. I think America is the vehicle through which the world may be reborn. Something new is trying to be born into the world: real freedom. Real democracy. America is the center of that. But there is no democracy here now in our government or our people. It's a sham.

America is a country unlike any that has ever existed. It's a melting pot of cultures. And it was founded by some Europeans who were influenced by the indigenous peoples here, the Indians. Not many people know this, but the ideas of freedom and democracy upon which the Founding Fathers started our country came from the Indians. So America has always had a dual personality: European on the one hand, and the Indian ideal of freedom on the other, embodied in the prototypical Amercian story, the Western, and in that prototypical American character, the cowboy. It's a schizophrenic personality, really, at once terribly creative and terribly destructive. It created all the wonderful technology, but that technology has become extremely destructive. It created a wonderful new country, but it destroyed the native peoples that were the source of what was good in it, and it enslaved another people and then used them to make itself feel worthwhile and superior and to cover up its enormous feelings of inadequacy and inferiority.

Now something terribly evil is at work in the world and America is in the center of it. America is the new Babylon, the new Rome. It is spreading it's empty non-culture all over the world. It's only values are money and power. It wants to control the whole world and it is destroying everything of value that came from the traditional cultures of the world. The American dream has become a materialistic sham. The country is hogging the world's resources and living in an incredibly wasteful way. The amount of garbage created in this country is just staggering, unimaginable. The people live as if the earth is infinite and there is no tomorrow. They live in utter denial.

At the same time, there is a spirit inside the people here. A hunger and thirst for real freedom. A spiritual thirst. It is something that seems to require a calamity in order to be released. And a calamity may be coming. How will that thirst for freedom assert itself against the evil?

It sucks massively because the government is totally fricked up...we are so not living in a democracy. We don't even get to choose our president! Do you really think Bush won fair and square 8 years ago?? I know better.

I think that your international and defence policies could do with a re-think!

I know that the country and its people are a very mixed bunch, but your dominant culture I really hate - what the US chooses to promote itself with.

And those horrible whiny accents that some of you have.

And the fact that you all seem to think that lose (as in 'I hate to lose') is spelt loose (your knickers are too loose) - drives me mad!

It is neither. It is just another place on earth. I don't understand why people are so eager to make things 'either or'. Life is what it is. Stop trying to make life fit into some nice, neat package and just live it.

The US is the greatest. I chose to become a citizen 24 years ago and haven't regretted it one bit.

i think it is awesome. ppl can say that we dont have freedom, but they are ignorant. we really have it good. the small amount of sacrifice is just for security.
