Nothing is free, and if it is, it doesn't amount to anything. This is one of the big delemas in life. Do you make the individual pay for all services he recieves. This is a nice thought but a lot of people can't afford to pay, there there is a shortfall which people must make up by paying extra taxes. There is also the idea that taxes are required to pay for services for people that can't afford to pay for them.
No matter what you may want to call it, the rich end up paying for the poor. Fair or not, this is the way that life works.pp

In Australia we have Universal Health Care. It is paid for by our taxes. Hospital is free, but you may have a wait depending on 1) how serious your condition is, and 2) how "popular" your condition is. For instance my friend was diagnosed with advanced cancer and was in hospital getting the best treatment in 3 days. But for something like a knee replacement or a cataract, which are popular and elective, you might wait 3-6 months.

First of all nothing, nothing is free. Funds to run the government are raised by initiating some sort of tax., whether it be on exports, sales, income, value added,or some other charge against employee income. From these collections the French government doles money to run hospitals whose services are free.

Taxes. and in countries where there is free medical care, it usually takes longer to see a doctor like 6 months. Not sure on hospitals though.

Nothing's completely free. ;)
Hospitals (and anything else) that offer free or reduced cost care to their patients receive funding from the government. The government receives its money from the populace in the form of taxes.

The only ways governments can fund health care for free is to tax the population or business, or for the government to run a major profitable business- such as some Middle East countries do with oil profits.

They are free here in Australia its part of the services provided by the Govenment from taxes paid by the citizens.
And No our taxes are not harsh but what we pay is well worth it.
No one here dies because they cant afford cancer treatment or a heart transplant or anything else for that matter. All women have their babies free in hospital.
If Australia can do it why cant others, especially the US

Nothing is free.
The money has to come from somewhere, and guess what?
It comes out of out tax money.
It's going to be paid for by some one.
IT COMES OUT OF THE HARDWORKING, TAXPAYERS, PAYCHECK!!
Do you look at your pay check and wish you had more take home pay?
The Government is run by our tax money.
Every time special interest groups get money to make a study, for the new media to report the results on the daily news, you can be sure that, they acquired our tax money from our government to pay their wages and pay for the study.
Listen to the news. They report some kind of results from some irrelevant survey or study 2 or 3 time a day.
Sorry, I didn't mean to get started on politics.

well, some countries are corrupt so probably the hospital got their money from their citizens. I mean the government must have told the citizens that they were doing some kind of project and they raised taxes higher than usual.

Here in France the health system is free and excellent, however, I pay a little more for that extra special treatment. Our taxes pay for it, it is affordable on account we don't spend billions of euros supplementing illegal immigrants or on fighting for a lost cause (Iraq) however, as I am now retired I don't pay taxes, my habitation tax is also free but I still have to pay land tax of 675 euros per year
