as long as you go to City hall and sign a marriage certificate.,...you could get married in Zimbabwe and it would be legal

If married in Mexico then you are legally married in Mexico and anywhere else in the world. You should contact the U.s. embassy or the consulate of Mexico to find out the details

Married is married. As long as the marriage was legal, ie: Both of you were of age in that country, you weren't married to someone else at the time, and you weren't mentally incompetent, and the papers were properly signed and witnessed, you are married.

Yes, the marriage gets registered with the US embassy, and is just as legal as getting married at home.
My daughter is getting married Dec 28th in Jamaica. Same rules apply.
