Deadwood, South Dakota is the legendary Deadwood where Wild Bill Hickok was shot and other events happened. The Cheyenne to Deadwood Stage ran from Cheyenne, WY to Deadwood, SD in territorial days.

The modern town of Deadwood, SD has some of the old buildings preserved, but it's also a gambling haven with lots of small casinos (no huge ones). Because it is in a mountain valley, the town is long and narrow with roads that scale the sides of the mountains.

You can visit the museums and I believe there's an old mine that can be toured. It's not far from Mt. Rushmore and Jewel Cave National Monument.

Deadwood is in SD. I spent a day there with my family this summer. It is a neat place to be if you are in to history. This is the place where Wild Bill Hitchcock was murdered and Calamity Jane lived.
Deadwood IS wonderfully preserved. A lot of the places have original antiques that were there in the late 1800s. If you are walking down the streets downtown, you are sure to find at least 3 casinos on each block. Most of them allow kids inside, although they cannot gamble. One of the coolest things was Hollywood in Deadwood, which is a museum. A bunch of places donated movie memoribilia. There was even cars there!!!! I'm sure you know about Herbie and one of the James Bond cars!!!
